I. What do you have to know before coming to Austria as an Exchange Student?



To register as an EXCHANGE STUDENT (through a program: JOINT-STUDY, ERASMUS, etc.) at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt please use our online Mobility Information System (MOBIS for sort). We kindly ask to use only this system for the application process. More information about the application process and the required documents can be found here

Please note that accommodation for exchange students (Erasmus, Joint-Study) can only be organised if you have registered online on the database AND have paid the deposit.


Apartments are generally shared with 2 beds per room. A deposit is required which varies depending on the hall of residence. Deposits will be refunded when you leave.
If you prefer to make alternative living arrangements, the ÖAD has a wide range of private accommodation available.
Should you be arriving late in the evening and therefore unable to move into the room immediately, it is best to organize temporary accommodation at the local youth hostel, which is located very close to the university campus.

Note: to help with efficient processing of reserving the accommodation, please inform the International Office of the exact date/time of your arrival at Klagenfurt.





The following table should give you an idea of the average cost of living for students in Austria. The figures may vary considerably depending on your personal lifestyle and should only be taken as a guideline.

II. What do you have to do after coming to Austria as an Exchange Student?



a) Arriving at Klagenfurt Airport
Klagenfurt airport is approximately 4 km away from the city centre and about 8 km from the university itself. There is a bus connection (no.42) from the airport to the city centre/ “Heiligengeistplatz” where you should change to a number 10/11/12.
Should you arrive late in the evening, it is better to take a taxi; the journey to the university should cost around EUR 15,-- (subject to change without notice)


b) Arriving by train
There is a direct bus service from Vienna airport to “Wien Meidling” train station. It costs EUR 6,-- and runs every 20 minutes between 7:10 am and midnight (the journey takes about 20 min). There is a direct train to Klagenfurt every 2 hours. A single ticket costs around EUR 45,-- per person (2nd class). There is a bus connection from Klagenfurt main station to the university (number 13). A taxi from the station to the university should cost around EUR 11,-- (subject to change without notice)

Within 3 days of arrival in Austria you have to register at the Municipal Office („Meldeamt“).  You will need a copy of your passport and a form which you can obtain at the International Office. The International Office will assist you with the registration procedure.

The Municipal Office can be found by taking bus number 61 from the central bus station "Heiligengeistplatz" to the bus stop “Hasnerstrasse”. There you walk up the perpendicular street “Kumpfgasse”.

In the first weeks of each semester (March, October) you can also register in the ÖH-Serviceoffice in the main building on campus.



Set up a bank account with a nearby bank: We would recommend to you the "Kärntner Sparkasse" in the Servicebuilding.

A bank account is needed to pay your rent.

You will need your Student ID not only as an identification for student discounts, but also for the library, to enter the University after 9 p.m. for computer use 

1 You should go to the main campus building and check in at the Admissions Office ("Studienabteilung"). After entering the main entrance you find the Admissions Office on your left (office hours Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 am – 12 pm and on Thursday only from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm)

2. The picture for the ID will be taken directly in the Admissions Office. The person at the counter will give you your student ID.  

3. Before your Student ID is activated you have to pay EUR 18,00 ("ÖH-Beitrag" - Austrian Student Union Fee - subject to change withou notice). We recommend that you open a bank account otherwise if you pay in cash an extra free of about EUR 2-3,- (subject to change without notice) can be charged. You will get the payment slip in the Admissions Office during your enrollment as as student of the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt. 

  Please save this receipt as you will need the pin code to activate your computer account.  

4. 5-7 days after payment, you can activate your card in the main building and register online for the courses:

As soon as the € 18,00 arrived on the bank account of the university, you can print the semester date on your Student card right outside of the Admissions Office (“Studienabteilung”). It is also possible to print out a confirmation of your studies in front of the Admissions Office with the computer. Both the activation of your card and printing of a confirmation of studies (“Studienbestätigung”) are also only possible after the Admissions Office has received payment (10 days after payment). 
Please do not forget to register for all courses online.  



Use the password and pin code given on the bank receipt to sign in.
The University’s main website is also the home site upon opening the Internet Explorer.
Directly across from the Admissions Office and downstairs is one of several computer rooms in the University. At the bottom of the stairs turn left and you will see the double doors leading to the computer room.


7. REGISTRATION FOR CLASSES (after you paid the Austrian Student Union Fee)

You might not have time to do all of this before your other classes start: if this is the case, email the professors and/or just talk to them in the 1st week.
The professors can enroll/approve you later.



It is possible for exchange students to take a health insurance in Austria. If you wish to do so you can take get insured after you had been registered at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt. The necessary forms can be obtained at the International Office.

You will need:

  • the Police registration form (Meldezettel)
  • Studienbestätigung and Studienblatt (print off to show you are enrolled at the University. You can print this out)
  • Copy of passport/ID

The Health Insurance form can be obtained in the International Office. You should return the Health Insurance form with the above mentioned documents to the Health Insurance Company as soon as possible.

The payment form will be sent to your address monthly. The Health Insurance costs about EUR 51,55 per month (subject to change without notice). The insurance card will be sent  after you have applied for insurance to the address that you have given to the Health Insurance Company.
The office can be found by taking the bus 40/41/42 from the central bus station, “Heiligengeistplatz” in the direction of the main train station (Hauptbahnhof) and getting off at the bus stop “Wirtschaftskammer”. As you get off the bus you walk straight up the perpendicular street Kumpfgasse. The “GKK” is the second building on the right, just after the “Finanzamt”.

TBE inoculation (FSME/tick-borne encephalitis)
All students who intend to spend the spring semester (March to July) at Klagenfurt are strongly advised to be inoculated against TBE which is transmitted by ticks. Price approx. EUR 19,-- per shot (subject to change without notice).
Timing: first inoculation in March, second inoculation approx 4 weeks later (booster after one year and then every three years).

Courses from all other faculties at the University can be visited by exchange  students (if there are no special requirements). The student fees are waived for all exchange students visiting (through a program: Joint Study, Erasmus, etc.). There is a variety of different types of courses offered at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt. There are lectures with a final written, or sometimes oral exam, seminars and introductory seminars with participation required, and a with a combination of either presentations, midterm exams and/or a paper plus a final exam, courses with smaller groups and more participation, etc. For almost all courses there is online material made available and. The final grade is from 1 -5, 1 being the equivalent of an A in the American grading system, and 5 the equivalent of an F. There is a second and third date available for almost all exams in case one does not pass.



INFORMATION FOR "non EU students": 


Students need the following documents in order to apply for a "RESIDENCE PERMIT" ("AUFENHALTSBEWILLIGUNG STUDIERENDE") in Klagenfurt:

  • Two passport size photographs 
  • Passport - must be valid at least three months beyond the date of arrival in Klagenfurt
  • Acceptance letter("Bescheid") from the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt (which students receive before coming to Klagenfurt) 
  • Housing confirmation (which will be sent to the student by our housing coordinator) 
  • Student Health Insurance (which the students can apply for immediately after receiving their student ID from the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt) 
  • Proof of sufficient funds (the bank statement should show sufficient funds for the student´s entire stay at Klagenfurt) 
  • Copy of their birth certificate Certificate of good conduct
  • The student visa costs EUR 110,-- (subject to change without notice)


Confirmation of registration for EU/EEA and SWISS CITIZENS (“ANMELDEBESCHEINIGUNG”)

  • Valid identification card or passport
  • Residence registration form issued by the Administrative District Authority in Klagenfurt (“Meldezettel”) 
  • Proof of health insurance covering all the necessary costs (e.g. European Health Insurance Card) (“Krankenversicherung”) 
  • Proof of sufficient financial means from your bank or the Erasmus contract from your home university (“Bankauszug” or “Bestätigung über das Erasmus Stipendium”) 
  • Confirmation of admission from the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt (“Studienbestätigung”) 
  • Passport photo  
  • The “Anmeldebescheinigung” costs EUR 15,-- (subject to change without notice)

University Library

With over 620 000 volumes on the shelves and around 3 000 current subscriptions to journals and other periodicals, the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt library is the largest academic libary in Carinthia.
Opening hours: Monday-Wednesday 9 am - 7 pm, Thursday 9 am - 9 pm, Friday 9 am - 6 pm, Saturday 9 am - 1 pm.
During the semester breaks and on days when there are no classes, the university library is open Monday-Friday 9 am - 4 pm and Wednesday 9 am -7 pm.

Computer centre

The Klagenfurt University offers a comprehensive range of computer services: Email, internet access via modem, IDSN or telecable, electronic printing accounts for the university’s computers.
Accessing computers is also simple with over 50 open access work stations throughout the university, available for use 24/7. Users of the University’s system register online as ZID users with their assigned pin code.

ÖH (Österreichische Hochschülerschaft) - the Austrian National Union of Students

The Austrian students union is the legal body which represents all students. Its voluntary student workers are committed to advocating student’s interests. All students at Austrian universities are obliged by law to pay a membership fee when they are admitted to a course of studies. They then become a member of the ÖH.


USI - University Sports Institute
The institute publishes the program for its courses at the beginning of every semester.
The USI offers a wide range of sporting activities. The sports range through: skiing, aerobics, taichi, yoga, basketball and many more. Registration is possible during its office hours.



Student discounts

ÖH can give you information on reductions for public transport, theatre and concert tickets, museums, books, etc.

Visit the train station and fill out a form for the "Vorteilscard"

To the train station: From the university you can take bus 12 (only from 6:45 am to 7.15 pm) or from the bus stop “Minimundus” (from the front of the university turn left and walk straight ahead in “Neckheimgasse” until you reach the canal “Lendkanal”. There you cross the foot bridge and walk through the park to where you will see a parking lot and across from this the bus stop, “Minimundus”). From the “Minimundus” bus stop take bus 20/21/10/11 to Heiligengeistplatz and from there take the bus 40/41 to the “Hauptbahnhof”. As you enter the train station you will see a separate section to the right. Go through the glass doors and ask for an application for a “Vorteilscard”.

a. This card allows for discounts of 45% in Austria and 25% outside of Austria but within the EU
b. You fill out the form and include two passport sized pictures and pay EUR 19,-- (EUR 99,90 for people older than 26 years of age.) - subject to change without notice
c. You will need to show them your passport as well.
d.  Once turned in you immediately receive a receipt of payment which makes you eligible for this discount. This receipt must be presented with your ticket to the conductor until you receive the “Vorteilscard” by mail. Also be sure to show your receipt or “Vorteilscard” when purchasing a ticket, or if done from a ticket vending machine choose the option “Vorteilscard” in order to pay the discounted price.

Klagenfurt has a well developed bus network. Single tickets may be bought from the driver (EUR 1.80) while ticket blocks and monthly passes may be bought at the following address:
