To register as an ERASMUS Student or as an exchange student at the Klagenfurt University please fill in the following forms and send them, along with the documents listed below, to the International Office by the 31st of July for the winter semester and the 31st of December for the summer semester.

Apartments are generally shared with 2 beds per room. A deposit is required which varies depending on the hall of residence. Deposits will be refunded when you leave.
If you prefer to make alternative living arrangements, the ÖAD has a wide range of private accommodation available.
Should you be arriving late in the evening and therefore unable to move into the room immediately, it is best to organize temporary accommodation at the local youth hostel, which is located very close to the university campus.

As most courses at the University of Klagenfurt are conducted in German, it is advised that students have a reasonable level of German.
Not all courses are conducted in German, some are also offered in English. There are also possibilities to improve your German through the German intensive language courses that the university offers prior to the semester courses.
-intensive courses: these are offered in three week intervals, with classes being held every day Monday to Friday.
-semester courses: a range of German courses are offered; General German, grammar courses, conversation, phonetics and more.

With over 620 000 volumes on the shelves and around 3 000 current subscriptions to journals and other periodicals, Klagenfurt University library is the largest academic libary in Carinthia.

The Klagenfurt University offers a comprehensive range of computer services: Email, internet access via modem, IDSN or telecable, electronic printing accounts for the university’s computers.
Accessing computers is also simple with over 50 open access work stations throughout the university, available for use 24/7. Users of the University’s system register online as ZID users with their assigned pin code.

The Austrian students union is the legal body which represents all students. Its voluntary student workers are committed to advocating student’s interests. All students at Austrian universities are obliged by law to pay a membership fee (EUR 15.36) when they are admitted to a course of studies. They then become a member of the ÖH.
The Klagenfurt University offers a program entitled entrée. This program provides every individual exchange student with personal assistance regarding any difficulties they may encounter before coming to Austria and while residing in Austria. Every student will be assigned an Austrian contact who will assist you throughout the exchange process.
So if everything looks a little overwhelming don’t stress, help is at hand.
The institute publishes the program for its courses at the beginning each of every semester.
The USI offer a wide range of sporting activities. The sports range through: skiing, aerobics, taichi, yoga, basketball and many more. Registration is possible during its office hours.
a) Arriving in Klagenfurt
Klagenfurt airport is approximately 4 km away from the city centre and about 8 km from the university itself. There is a bus connection (no.42) from the airport to the city centre/ “Heiligengeistplatz” where you should change to a number 10/11 or 12 bus.
Should you arrive late in the evening, it is better to take a taxi; the journey to the university should cost around EUR 15.--
b) Arriving by train
There is a direct bus service from Vienna airport to the Wiener "Südbahnhof” train station. It costs EUR 6,-- and runs every 20 minutes between 7.10am and midnight (the journey takes about 20 min). There is a direct train to Klagenfurt every 2 hours. A single ticket costs around EUR 32.10 per person (2nd class). There is a bus connection from Klagenfurt main station to the university (nos. 40/41/42 bus) via Heiligengeistplatz where you should change to a number 10/11/12/13 bus. A taxi from the station to the university should cost around EUR 11,--

It is possible as an exchange student to take a health insurance in Austria. If you wish to do so you can do this after you have been registered at the University of Klagenfurt as an exchange student. The necessary forms can be obtained from the International Office.
TBE inoculation (FSME/tick-borne encephalitis)
All students who intend to spend the summer semester (March to July) in Klagenfurt are strongly advised to be inoculated against TBE which is transmitted by ticks. Price approx. EUR 17,-- per shot.
Timing: first inoculation in March, second inoculation approx 4 weeks later (booster after one year and then every three years).

ÖH can give you information on reductions for public transport, theatre and concert tickets, museums, books, etc.
Present your identity card and a passport photo at the railway station to obtain a students rail pass (“Vorteilskarte”) for EUR 19.90 valid for a year. Students under the age of 26 at the beginning of the academic year are entitled to a reduction of 40% on regular train fares within Austria.
• Most shops are open Monday-Friday 8am-7pm. Supermarkets and food stores are open 7.30am-7pm. Some shops are open on Saturday until 5pm otherwise until 1pm.
• Cheapest food shopping in town: LIDL supermarket, August-Jaksch-Strasse 48, HOFER supermarket, Villacherstrasse 45
• Sunday shopping: BILLA, At the Train Station. Opening hours 6am-9pm.
• Banks are generally open Monday-Friday 8am-midday and 2pm-4pm. A personal identity card or passport is required to open an account.
• The counters at post offices are open Monday-Friday 8am-midday and 2pm-5pm.
