Pervasive Computing

Pervasive Computing Group, October 2011
Pervasive Computing Group, October 2011

Founded in 2007, the Pervasive Computing Group at Klagenfurt University is part of the Institute of Networked and Embedded Systems (NES).

Its research is focused on theoretical and practical aspects of innovative pervasive and ubiquitous computing. Research topics include smart cameras, sensor networks, sensor fusion and embedded signal processing architectures. Our research is conducted in close cooperation with national and international partners both in academia as well as in industry.

Our teaching activities cover fundamentals, technologies and applications of pervasive computing for students of information technology and computer science. Dedicated lab courses help students to acquire practical experiences, and seminars address recent topics of pervasive computing research. At the graduate level, we currently offer courses on fundamentals and advanced topics on pervasive computing, digital signal processors and radio frequency identification (RFID). At the undergraduate level, we offer a lecture on digital system design and a lab course on fundamentals of ICT.

Mark your calendar! Guest Lecture "Artificial Vision", June 2012!

Lecture Series on “Artificial Vision”
Prof. Gian Luca Foresti, Dr. Christian Micheloni and Dr. Claudio Piciarelli
(all University of Udine)

The lecture series will aim to introduce the techniques for developing advanced artificial vision based systems. From the early stages of image creation to the most advanced techniques for image and video interpretation the course will propose the state of the art algorithms for detecting objects and understanding their behaviours. A small amount of hours will be reserved to laboratory activities.

Patent applications for generating mosaicks!

Researchers of the Pervasive Computing group developed a method to generate an overview image -- a so-called mosaick -- from a set of individual aerial images. The novel mosaicking methods were filed as patent applications at the European and US patent offices. The manuscripts have recently been published and are available for download using identifiers EP 2423871 and EP 2423873.

The 6th ACM/IEEE International Conference on Distributed Smart Cameras (ICDSC 2012) will be held in Hong Kong, Japan October 30 - November 2, 2012!

Our proposal for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate program "Interactive and Cognitive Environments" has been recently accepted. This new training and research program will be offered by the Klagenfurt University  in cooperation with the University of Genova (coordinator), UPC Barcelona, TU Eindhoven, and Queen Mary University of London. It is expected to start in fall 2010, offering about 15 PhD scholarships per year.

Erasmus Mundus promotes scientific excellence and mobility in higher education in Europe. The selection process of the doctoral schools was very competitive: Out of about 150 proposals, 13 proposals have been selected. Klagenfurt is the only Austrian university participating in an Erasmus Mundus doctorate program.
