Internships (Praxissemester)

Internships as part of the academic curriculum are still a speciality to Klagenfurt’s Informatics curriculum. The qualification for the master’s degree requires internships that are generally one semester of work experience in industry or research. Graduate students are enabled to participate in complex software development projects, gather new problem solution perspectives, or apply and enhance methods and tools of their area of expertise.

Students are encouraged to acquire contacts with companies and propose internships by themselves or they may choose from the proposals given. In either case, please contact an advisor before you make definitive arrangements.

DescriptionThe main task of this internship is to extend an existing mobile S.O.S. system that has been developed in the course of the BRIDGE project (

The system facilitates ad-hoc communication between first responders and victims in emergency situations. It comprises an Android application for victims that supports the broadcasting of distress signals and a corresponding Android application for responders that allows first responders to discover these signals and trace victims. In particular, this system should be extended by the possibility to exchange multimedia data such as short voice messages or pictures between first responders and victims.

DescriptionStefan Petscharnig has completed his short term scientific semester in the SocialSensor project ( He implemented the distributed algorithm Merge and Forward which provides Inter-Destination Multimedia Synchronization in a peer-to-peer network on Android. The Android application uses MPEG's Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP for streaming multimedia from a server (i.e., YouTube). As a final result of the short term scientific semester a demonstration paper, which reports on the developed Android application, has been accepted at the Conference Multimedia Systems 2015.
